Bountiful Spirit -March 31, 2021

Hebrews 12:1-3

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart.

Reflection by Cheryl Rogers

The comparison to running a physical race comes to mind when reading this lesson. Although I assure you I have no personal experience, I know many who run marathons and it’s easy to draw similarities.

‘Run with perseverance’ just as the physical runner must build up their endurance to make it to the elusive finish line. ‘Let us also lay aside every weight and sin that clings so closely’ just like a runner wears lightweight clothing or high-performance shoes that can be the difference between victory and defeat.‘Look to Jesus,’ like a runner who must resist distractions along the race so they don’t stumble. We must stay focused on the work Jesus has set forth. In both scenarios, we mustkeep our eyes on the prize!

It’s easy to run when there is clear weather, but when a rainstorm or uneven terrain interferes with the race, it’s tough to keep going.Regardless, we must consider all that Jesus endured on our behalf when he gave his life on the cross and completed the work of atonement so that we wouldn’t grow weary or lose heart.

Stay focused! Run with endurance and remember running the race of faith is not a fifty-yard dash, it’s a marathon.
